Season 2 Episode 6

Welcome back for Part Two of our conversation about The Color Purple (2023). This week’s episode is all about the highs and lows. Joy, sisterhood, and the phenomenal music and dancing are some of the most important components of the film, showing off black love, joy and desire. We get into the relationship between Celie and Shug Avery. Necessarily, we speak on the venom of racism that we see play out in Sophia’s storyline, and the way it still runs rampant today.

We invite you to read Mouths of Rain: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Thought to participate in our next episode.

Black Artist Shout Out this week goes out to Sofie, a Ghanaian singer, songwriter, and producer based in Los Angeles. Her style of R&B and Afrobeats is smooth and contains messages about what she finds important in the world. Support her on Instagram (@lionessofie), Spotify, and Apple Music.
